RIBA London has launched an Autumn Policy Debate Series to review and re-consider three key areas of interest.

The events are free and open to members and the general public. Through expert contributions and commentary the events are intended to provoke and reveal policy priorities as the institute looks ahead to 2011 and gets to grips with the emerging priorities of the coalition government and their likely impact on architects and the wider built environment.

Wednesday 20 October, 09:00 Gallery 1 RIBA

The RIBA with CABE, The RTPI, The Landscape Institute and Urban Design London have invested heavily in the promotion of a variety of methods of design capacity building- most notably Design Review. Its role is to support and nurture design consideration in the planning system and act as a check on landmark schemes as they progress towards their next stage and completion. Its feedback is not mandatory, its effectiveness rests heavily with an enlightened client or council to act and it can be conducted in any number of ways drawing on professional expertise within local areas.

The debate asks:

  • Where the built environment professions go next with this and whether the existing process is an effective means by which to give design its teeth in the planning system?
  • Is it the best way to nurture development prior to application?
  • Is it robust enough to rest within the legislative process or should we be investing in and ultimately restoring faith in the local authority as design champion?

With contributions from: Fred Manson - Heatherwick Studio and Former Director of Regeneration at the London Borough of Southwark, Mark Brearley - Design for London and Finn Williams of Croydon Borough Council.
