What we do
Empty rates
Business rate relief on empty commercial property was removed on 1 April 2008. Empty retail and office space previously received 100% relief for three months and 50% thereafter, while industrial space received 100% indefinitely.
Since 1 April 2008, full rates must be paid after three months' grace for non-industrial premises and six months' for industrial.
Starting 1 April 2009, all properties with rateable values less than £15,000 will be exempt from paying business rates for one year, as announced in the Pre-Budget Report 2008. While the Chancellor claimed that more than 70% of properties fell below this threshold, those properties only account for 13% of the business rates paid to the Exchequer.
