What we do

Investment

Property investment and property investment vehicles are relevant to most of our members, either directly as investors and developers or through involvement as professional advisors.

In recent years, the profile of property as an asset class has grown, not least due to the ups and downs of the stock market, the increased emphasis on saving for retirement, the performance of commercial property and global influences.

The introduction of real estate investment trusts (REITs) on 1 January 2007 is expected to increase the interest in property investment still further. However, we are actively involved in the development of a wide range of property investment vehicles. From a broader policy objective, our aim is to create an efficient property investment environment whereby investor decisions are governed primarily by factors other than taxation.

Authorised investment funds

We are actively involved in lobbying for an improved tax regime for authorised investment funds (AIFs)

Property derivatives

We are monitoring the development of this expanding market for the property sector

Real estate investment trusts (REITs)

We were instrumental in their introduction and continue to lobby for improvements in this new regime for quoted property investment

Reita campaign

We are a key member and were fundamental in setting up The REITs and Quoted Property Group and its campaign to raise awareness and understanding of property investment

Self invested personal pensions (SIPPs)

We are actively involved in the development of this vehicle for investment in commercial property and (indirectly) in residential property
